Auschwitz on Facebook

The museum of the Auschwitz-Birkenau death camp launched its profile, “Auschwitz Memorial”, on Facebook last week with the intent of educating young people about what happened in the camp during the World War II Nazi period.

According to the Huffington Post, the profile looks to be a place for discussion, reflection and learning about what happened. More than one million people, most of them Jews, were killed at these two camps together gypsies and Soviet prisoners, during 1940 and 1945.

It seems odd that on a site that is usually used for information and photos about friends, funny posts and videos, and the ins and outs of life, can be a platform for an organization that commemorates such a horrid period in history. But, looking into it, other Holocaust remembrance organizations like The Simon Wiesenthal Center and the U.S. Holocaust Museum also have pages on Facebook.

Given the popularity of Facebook, it’s only natural that these types of organizations jump in the bandwagon and take advantage of it to educate the population. The museum already had established a YouTube account in 2008, which has been viewed y 22,000 people. The Anne Frank memorial and Yad Vashem also have a YouTube channel.
